What has been your career path to date?
I was head hunted for a position with Big Yellow as an Assistant Store Manager whilst being in between jobs. Not having much knowledge of the job or company I attended the interview and liked the job description and company ethos. I was then asked to do a day on the job where I got a better understanding of the role. Having been offered the job within a week I was happy to accept with not much thought of my future with the company but to essentially to be employed.
How do you think that Big Yellow encourages ethnic diversity in the workplace?
I think the fact that I was given the job not solely on my CV but on my personality also I do think that there is no prejudice and no set criteria for the kind of employee Big Yellow recruit but more so for them to be a good with people. During my time with Big Yellow I have seen stores employees reflecting the demographics of the area which is a reason why they are successful in gaining business from the surrounding areas
How do you think that Big Yellow ensures fair treatment and encourages the inclusivity of all employees?
This is done from the start of the recruitment process as you are considered an eligible candidate on your personality and ability to build rapport with others, not your level of experience and qualifications. I have never during my time at Big Yellow felt unfairly treated or felt to believe I do not have the same opportunities available as another employee. Ongoing training is also available to help develop our skills and knowledge which is accessible to all dependent on your position.
How does Big Yellow promote a working environment where you can speak up and be heard?
We have many channels to speak up about how we feel through our management teams, area managers and also the HR department who are always happy to lend an ear. We also have Yello (an internal newsletter) where anyone can put up a post about whatever they would like. You also have confidential channels to speak through and such is the relationship with area managers that you have the comfort of just picking up the phone and speaking to them.
What has Big Yellow done to specifically support your career?
Upon joining I did express my goal to manage a store of my own. I was given an assistant managers career path of all courses I would have to complete to make me a more knowledgeable and suitable candidate if such an opportunity was to present itself. Also, on the job development meetings have been beneficial to know areas of improvement needed and have been given feedback where necessary. I am a member of the inclusivity and diversity committee which gives me a voice to make an impact on a larger issues within the company but also to get important information regarding the companies stance on how they are received and how they can improve it and the lives of employees and customers.
What is it that makes Big Yellow a great place to work?
It was something I once heard that resonated with me which was ‘it’s a large little company’ in terms of you can pick up the phone to anyone within the company and will always be received with a helpful and happy person on the other end. Makes working for Big Yellow a lot more comfortable and excited for its future.
