Who am I?

Renate
Store Manager
Started October 2024

What has been your career path to date?

I joined Big Yellow/Armadillo in October 2024, bringing with me a background in fast food management, having worked with brands like Burger King and Wendy’s. In those roles, I served as a Site Manager and Certified Area Trainer, where I was responsible for leading teams, opening new stores, and delivering consistent training across multiple locations.

I take great pride in maintaining a high standard in-store and am always willing to go the extra mile to support both customers and colleagues.

In 2022, I graduated from the University of Hull with a degree in Forensic and Analytical Chemistry. I was the only student to graduate from that specific course in my year, which is something I’m incredibly proud of.

During my final year, I was approached by Burger King to help launch one of their new stores. This opportunity quickly evolved into a fast-tracked promotion to Area Trainer, where I oversaw several locations and ensured operational, financial, and team alignment across the region. Training hundreds of team members while still early in my own career was a challenge I embraced with pride and determination.

Despite the rewarding experience, I realised that maintaining a healthy work-life balance was difficult in that environment. I began looking for a company that offered more support and a better balance.

Interestingly, I had been a Big Yellow customer for nearly eight years, so when a role became available, I jumped at the chance, and I’m so glad I did.

Outside of work, I love to travel. Whether it’s a big adventure or a short getaway. I enjoy being outdoors and capturing beautiful views whenever I can. And, a fun fact: my favourite colour is yellow, which makes working at Big Yellow feel like the perfect fit!

What has been your greatest career achievement to date?

So far, my greatest career achievement (aside from graduating university) has been my recent promotion from Assistant Store Manager to Store Manager here in Hull.

In my previous roles, promotions often came quickly, and while I was proud of the work I did, they sometimes felt like a natural next step rather than a milestone. At Big Yellow, however, I’ve always felt there was more to learn, and I often questioned whether I was ready. That’s why this promotion meant so much to me. It boosted my confidence and proved that I’m capable of stepping into roles even when I don’t have all the experience yet. It’s been a real turning point in how I see my own potential.

What’s most important to you in your career and why?

Starting work at a young age and experiencing a variety of work environments has taught me to truly value people. Especially managers and colleagues who genuinely look after one another.

I’ve learned that without a strong connection between you and your company; one that supports your goals, aspirations, and personal development, it becomes much harder to thrive in your role and show your full potential.

For me, one of the most important things I looked for in a company was the ability to achieve and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Believe me, that’s a rare find and something I don’t take for granted.

What is it that makes Big Yellow/Armadillo a great place to work?

1. Supportive and Close-Knit Teams

Having a strong, balanced team dynamic is incredibly important to me. That “family feel” where colleagues genuinely support one another is rare, but it’s something I’ve found at Big Yellow. The fact that directors are just an email away, and take the time to visit sites each year, makes you feel like you work with the company, not just for it.

2. Excellent Training and Development

I’ve been really impressed by Big Yellow’s commitment to training and career development. From apprenticeships to internal promotions, the opportunities to grow professionally are often overlooked by other employers. The level of training and passion here doesn’t just help you develop in your role; it helps you grow as a person.

3. Work-Life Balance

As I mentioned earlier, work-life balance is a huge priority for me. It’s something that’s hard to find, but Big Yellow has shown it’s possible to have a fulfilling career without sacrificing your personal life.

How are you supported in achieving a good work/life balance?

Well, where to begin…
From the training teams and Directors to Area Managers and your own colleagues, the support at Big Yellow is always there. No matter your role, everyone is just a phone call away. That kind of accessibility and encouragement makes a real difference and reinforces the feeling that you’re part of something bigger.
